UC Impressive at Asbury Dual Meet

WILMORE, Ky. — The Union College swimming team recorded 22 NAIA National Qualifying Times in a dual meet at Asbury on Saturday. In the event, host Asbury combined to beat Union by a score of 312-209.
“It was a very well fought swim meet,” said head coach Rafael Forti. “We had a chance to see our swimmers perform in a 16-event format meet for the first time this season and swim in a very competitive environment. The outcome was valid and I am happy for the way most swims turned out.”
In the meet, Union picked up their first victory of the day in the men’s 200-medley relay, where the Bulldogs finished with a time of 1:39.04. The men’s team also notched the first individual win of the day for UC, as Kyle Newhouse won the 1000-free after hitting the wall in 10:11.72.
The women’s team recorded their first win of the day in the 200-free, where Renata Cabral took the event with a time of 1:59.73. Cabral also broke a Asbury pool record in the 50-free, winning the event after hitting the wall in 24.70, and won the 100-free (53.91).
In other events for the women, Callie Harrigan broke the program record in the 200-back, winning the event in 2:15.13, and also won the 100-back (1:01.81).
For the men, Luis Ambrosio broke an Asbury pool record in a victory in the 200-breast (2:12.69), while recording a victory in the 100-breast (1:00.78), as well. Travis Strachan also won two events on the day, taking the 50-free (22.17), and the 100-free (49.13).
The last two wins of the day for UC came in the 400-free relay, as the men’s team won in 3:18.16, while the women’s team was victorious in 3:45.25. In all, 15 national qualifying “A” cuts were met in the meet by Union, while seven “B” cuts were attained.
The Union College swim teams return to action on Saturday when they host Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson and St. Catharine’s at home. The event will begin at 1 p.m.
